“The American Museum is a prism of American Society. Its buildings reflect civic pride, often serving as examples of outstanding architectural accomplishment.”
Riches, Rivals & Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in America

"It's time to take it to the next level ...
San Antonio needs a world-class museum."
- City Councilman Kevin Wolff
The Witte Museum has outgrown its quaint reputation as the “Attic of South Texas” and is poised to become a World-Class museum for a World-Class city. Bursting at the seams with school children, tourists, and local visitors, it is time for the Witte Museum to grow.
The Witte is poised to launch a major campus expansion that will add more than 65,000 square feet to the campus by 2010. This will include:
- A new South Texas Heritage Center,
- A Center for Rivers and Aquifers, and
- A Grand Entry and Campus Enhancements to preserve and exhibit the Witte’s renowned collections and to accommodate more than four times the current visitor capacity.
