Historic Images for 6-8 Guide Activity D: Connecting Water
Springs and Civilization
Historic images will help students understand that water was a central point of early
civilization and settlement and that the San Antonio area has grown tremendously over time. Use these historical images from San Antonio Was: Seen Through a Magic Lantern. Discuss how important the river and springs were for early settlers and how the areas have changed over time. Compare and contrast the historical use and importance of the springs and river to the use and importance in today’s economy.
For teachers and students interested in learning more about the history of springs and
rivers located in San Antonio and the Edwards Aquifer region, recommended resources include:
Brune, Gunnar. 1981. Springs of Texas, v. 1. Fort Worth: Branch-Smith Inc.
Lochbaum, Jerry, ed. 1968. Old San Antonio: History In Pictures. San Antonio: The Express Publishing Co.
