The Witte Museum again partnered with Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey to bring to kids of all ages a special kind of circus magic – this time in a unique splash of colors.
Extending to the museum grounds the giggles and gasps of summer circus fun that are part of San Antonio’s annual tradition, the Witte played host to ever-popular Kelly Ann -- the circus elephant that paints -- as she took kids to art school, right in the museum’s front yard on Friday, July 1. This summer special complemented Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s 134 th edition of The Greatest Show on Earth, appearing at The Alamodome June 29 through July 4.
Kids got the chance to interact up close with this genius elephant, learn her amazing painting tricks and try out what they learned by painting take-home portraits of Kelly Ann herself. Lucky participants got snow cones, peanuts, discount coupons to see the circus, coupons and hats from Chick Fil-A, and other premiums.
Kelly Ann’s masterpieces are a rare treasure for art lovers and circus fans and have been known to fetch handsome amounts; one sold for a record $37,000! The painting that was created this fun day with the kids will be Ringling Bros.’ Special donation to the Witte Museum. It will be auctioned at the Witte’s annual Game Dinner, October 17, to raise more funding for the museum’s programming.
