Sunday Jazz at the Witte Headliners, Fall 2005:

Ron Wilkins Quartet (feat: Joel Dilley) - October 23

With pianist Marc Pomerantz, bassist Joel Dilley, and drummer Darren Kuper, trombonist/vocalist Wilkins has one of the more polished groups in town. A typical set covers straight-ahead swing, funky groove, Latin beats, and ballads, with typically an even mixture of originals and standards and plenty of vocals. Wilkins is a powerhouse musician who knows how to work a crowd and who commands attention. He often will take several solos, scatting and playing trombone, within one tune. San Antonio Current's jazz musician of the year in 2004.

Regency Jazz Band (Regency 2005) - October 30
with vocalist Shelly Murray

Long-running (24 years) bastion of straight-ahead be-bop led by bassist George Prado. With Al Gomez on trumpet, saxophonist John Magaldi joining Aaron Prado on piano and drummer Chuck Glave, the Regency delivers high-energy hard bop in the tradition of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Vocalist Shelley Murray adds several vocals per set. A fixture on the Texas festival circuit, the Regency has a loyal and regional base of long-time fans.

Mike Flanigin B-3 Organ Trio - November 6

A great organ groove trio with roots in New York and in Austin, TX. Flanigin hits the keys and kicks the bass pedals, and he is accompanied by a pair of music-making aces, longtime stalwarts on the Texas and U.S. blues scenes, guitarist Denny Freeman and drummer George Rains. Flanigin and company dig deep into the classic R&B/soul/jazz B-3 repertoire and offer up excellent music and a big time.
