Dinosaurs Unearthed

Magic Lantern Magic Lantern Show
Saturday, March 13, 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Join us for two special Magic Lantern Shows, featuring a magnificent double magic lantern from the 1880s, The Rajah. Held in conjunction with Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio, Magic Lantern authority Jack Judson will give a demonstration projecting original images painted on glass from the Victorian times. Magic Lantern Shows were enjoyed around the world for more than 300 years, but are not often seen today. Included with museum admission.


Spring Break Adventure Club:
Dynamic Dinosaurs
March 15 – 19, 2010 | 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Day camp for children in grades 1-2 and 3-5

Explore the world of dinosaurs in the exhibit Dinosaurs Unearthed by becoming an amateur paleontologist. Create your own fossil, turn yourself into a dinosaur in “Designasaur” and go on a dinosaur dig. Cost is $180 per week for museum members and $230 per week for non-members. Keep it Clean! Keep it Healthy!

Do you know what it takes to keep the San Antonio River healthy? Learn how the entire family can work together to keep it clean! Join Witte staff and city-wide partners on World Water Day for a day of water quality exploration. Monitor the water quality of the San Antonio River and discover what can be done to restore the land along the banks to maintain a healthy river. Included with museum admission.

Hunger to Hope: Poems and Prose About Hunger

Held in connection with the exhibition Table of Contents: Portraits and Stories of Hunger and Resilience

As part of San Antonio's National Poetry Month 2010 celebrations, local poets and writers will read about hunger and responses to the problem. Readings by Jim LaVilla-Havelin, Mobi Warren, Naomi Nye, Alejandro Sifuentes, Andrew Thorton, Marian Aitches, Olga Samples Davis, introduced by Michael Nye. TABLE OF CONTENTS, a multi-media exhibition, is a documentary of voices, stories and portraits that explores the lives of 50 individuals who have experienced hunger. Nye has spent the past four years traveling and interviewing people of all ages and backgrounds, recording their personal stories and their portraits through photography. Spending several days with each subject, Nye documented the complex fabric of their lives. Preview the exhibition. News Release

Don Yena Don Yena:
Painting the South Texas Story

For years artist Donald Yena painted the cover illustrations for the San Antonio Rodeo programs and pursued his interest in painting the history of South and West Texas.  The Witte will present an exhibition of 11 large paintings that illustrate the history of Texas cattle ranching from its Spanish roots to the discovery of oil in the petroleum sands of South Texas. Dino-mite Family Day

Join us for this fun filled Science Family Day celebrating the world of dinosaurs. Spend the afternoon investigating dinosaur tracks and fossils. Unveiling the Feathered Dinosaur

Dinosaur George Blasing will be discussing some of the latest discoveries; including feathered dinosaurs, unveil some of the latest evidence discovered through CT scanning of the brain cases of dinosaurs and discuss some of the more unusual dinosaur discoveries in recent years. Bring your little fish to the big pond! Discover what lives in the San Antonio River, create a sunfish print of many colors and reel in an exciting snack. (For families with children ages 3-5).
In Touch with Nature
11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Investigate the tracks of local wildlife, design your own eco-journal and collaborate with others to create a sculpture using recycled materials. (For the entire family).

Jazz Meets Classical XVIII

Musical Offerings' blockbuster series, Jazz Meets Classical, is a unique collaboration between jazz and classical musicians in San Antonio. Join us for the 18th year of compositions which combine jazz and classical elements, showcase the work of local composers and arrangers and create a memorable experience for musicians and audiences. The Witte’s 2010 Fiesta exhibition showcases gowns from several courts of the Order of the Alamo Coronations, inspired by elements found in gardens including flowers, trees, small creatures and fountains. A highlight of the exhibition includes Princess Emily Denman’s train from the 1968 Coronation, the Court of Festivals. Her train of lilac velvet is decorated with butterflies hovering over a pool filled with lily pads, surrounded by several frogs, a small rabbit and flowers. This train is the basis for the 2010 Witte Fiesta pin.


Rock Art of the Canyonland
Wednesday | April 28 | 6 - 8 p.m.

The Lower Pecos Canyonlands of southwest Texas and northern Mexico house the oldest known illuminated, religious manuscripts in North America, the most complex and compositionally intricate prehistoric rock art in the world. First efforts to document these sites began in the 1930's; in some cases, these early efforts produced theonly surviving record of rock art. Join Dr. Carolyn Boyd, Director of the SHMULA School, for an in-depth look at this unique cultural legacy and the need to preserve this resource for future generations. Admission is $5 for museum members and students, and $10 for adults.
