Clown Alley
(Inside Exhibit)

Step right up and learn all about clowns and their role in the circus through this interactive
area designed for the entire family, Clown Alley. Visitors can discover circus lingo
and fun facts about the circus; leave comments on what they would be if joining
the circus; and go behind the make-up to learn how and why clowns choose their “face.”
Included with exhibit surcharge. Don’t miss performances, face painting
and balloon animals with San Antonio Clown Troupe, the Jolly Joeys!

Clowns are important members of the circus family! Join us for an afternoon of fun with San Antonio’s clown troupe, the Jolly Joeys. Bring the entire family to learn the meanings behind different make-up and costumes and discover the secrets of juggling scarves or walking the tight rope. Included with museum admission.

A Talk with Janet Davis
January 14, 6-8 p.m.

Join Janet M. Davis, Ph.D., for an intriguing evening of little known secrets, circus history and a visit to the exhibition. Davis is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin for the departments of American Studies and History. Davis is the author of the top-selling book, The Circus Age: Culture and Society under the American Big Top.
Admission is free for museum members; $10 for adults and $5 for students. News Release


The Long Shadows
A Talk with Jake Erlich
January 15, 7 p.m. | January 16, 1:30 p.m.

Hurry! Hurry! Come hear the remarkable story of Jake Erlich. At 8 feet 6 ½ inches in height, Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus Side Show billed him as “the tallest man in the world.” A giant in more ways than meet the eye, he was also a silent film star, artist, poet and much more. Join his nephew, Andrew Erlich, Ph.D., to explore how this “Texas Giant” turned a liability into an asset and found freedom through self expression. Admission is $5 for museum members and students, and $10 for adults. News Release
