Circus Folk Educators Workshop

Author and American Studies scholar Janet M. Davis, Ph.D. will provide an overview of the circus in American life. Participants will view the Witte's Hertzberg Circus Collection as they explore the exhibit Circus Folk: Secrets Behind the Big Top. Participants will also complete K-12 classroom activities and receive an activities packet connected to art and history TEKS.

Clown Alley
(Inside Exhibit)

Step right up and learn all about clowns and their role in the circus through this interactive area designed for the entire family, Clown Alley. Visitors can discover circus lingo and fun facts about the circus; leave comments on what they would be if joining the circus; and go behind the make-up to learn how and why clowns choose their “face.” Included with exhibit surcharge.Don’t miss performances, face painting and balloon animals with San Antonio Clown Troupe, the Jolly Joeys!

Circus Folk Family Days

Clowns are important members of the circus family! Join us for an afternoon of fun with San Antonio’s clown troupe, the Jolly Joeys. Bring the entire family to learn the meanings behind different make-up and costumes and discover the secrets of juggling scarves or walking the tight rope. Included with museum admission.

January 14, 6-8 p.m.

Join American Studies scholar and author Janet M. Davis, Ph.D., for an exploration of the circus in American life. This fun-filled evening includes circus history, little known secrets and a visit to the exhibit.
 
 

The Long Shadows
January 15, 7 p.m. | January 16, 1:30 p.m.

Join Andy Erlich, Ph.D., for the fascinating, true story of his uncle Jake Erlich, who at 8 feet 6 ½ inches tall, was at one point the tallest man in the world. Through a combination of stories, vintage photos, music, magic, video clips and poetry audiences will discover the true tales of this silent film star and Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus Side Show personality, and how this “Texas Giant” turned a liability into an asset and found freedom through self expression.
