Flights of Imagination: Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

Leonardo da Vinci had a life-long fascination with flight and used nature as his model.  He spent hours observing bats, insects and birds, and designed his flying machines to imitate their structure and motion

 

 

Flights of Imagination: Charles August Albert Dellschau (1830-1923)

Charles A. A. Dellschau, like Leonardo da Vinci, was fascinated with flying machines.   A self-taught artist, Dellschau created elaborate notebooks filled with watercolor collages and press clippings related to flight.  Inspired by the technology of his time which included balloons and engines, the intricate designs show the flying machines from a variety of perspectives.

 

 
 


Flights of Imagination: The Natural World

Today’s scientists continue to study the natural world for ways to improve flight.  Modern planes are still out performed by birds and other flying creatures because they have the ability to continually adapt to changing conditions.
