Revealing Character:
Robb Kendrick’s Texas Tintypes

Biography – Robb Kendrick

At a reception and book signing, Sept. 22, Robb Kendrick (center) was joined by two of his photographic subjects: Charles Ellis (left) and Johnny Stewart.

In the past few years, Robb Kendrick has traveled to 76 countries and all seven continents. Not bad for somebody born in the tiny town of Spur, Texas. Kendrick works for National Geographic, Life, Sports Illustrated ,Audubon, and Smithsonian. He also photographs advertising campaigns for such clients as Texas Tourism, Eddie Bauer and Frost Bank.

He has completed twelve stories for National Geographic in the past decade. The May 2003 issue showcased his 32-page story on Sherpas and the 50th anniversary of the summiting of Mt. Everest. Other published Geographic stories include Qatar (March 2003); Salt Lake Valley (Feb. 2002); Perfume (October 1998); Global Food Supply (October 1998); Sumo Wrestling (July 1997); a cover story on the state of global fishing (November 1995); the cultural significance of rice (May 1994); the restoration of a historic base in Antarctica (March 1993) and the Sherpas of the Himalayas (December 1992).

As much as he loves shooting with his 35mm camera, Kendrick's true passion has become wet plate photography on tin, known as tintype, a technique used during the mid-19th century. The famous photographer Matthew Brady used the wet plate technique to document the Civil War. The tintype photos that Kendrick produces are each one of a kind as they are all handmade from start to finish. His wet plate photo projects include historic ranches in the U.S. and traditional tequila harvesting and distillation in Mexico.

Kendrick lives near the Texas Hill Country town of Blanco in a stone barn that he and his wife, writer Jeannie Ralston, renovated. Kendrick and his wife are proud parents of two boys, Gus and Jeb. When not shooting photographs or spending time with his family, Kendrick tends to his 10 acres of lavender and maintains a wildlife habitat that he and his wife have established on their property.
