History of the Witte Game Dinner
The annual Game Dinner is the Witte's largest and most publicized fund-raiser. This South Texas casual style event features delicious cuisine, lively entertainment and exciting live and silent auctions. Game Dinner has also been recognized by the San Antonio Express-News as one of the most efficient fundraising events in the city, with 76 cents of every dollar raised going directly to the museum.
The tradition of the Witte Game Dinner began 39 years ago when area sportsmen and hunters were contacted and asked to clean out their lockers and donate game to the Witte for a barbeque and party on the Museum grounds. This event was one of the first in San Antonio to include a charity auction in a major fundraiser. Kathleen and Charles Kuper chaired the event that year, with Harry Jersig acting as Honorary Chair. Since that time, many distinguished Texas leaders including Laura Bush, Gen. Robert F. McDermott, Red McCombs, J.W. Marriott, Jr., Ross Perot and Judge Nelson Wolff have participated as Honorary Game Dinner Chairs.
