Dive in and discover the last unexplored frontier on Earth—the deep ocean! Odyssey’s SHIPWRECK! Pirates & Treasure makes its Texas debut at the Witte Museum. Get a close-up encounter with the wreck of the SS Republic, a side-wheel steamship lost in a fierce hurricane off the coast of Georgia in 1865. Discovered 1,700 feet below the surface of the Atlantic, the shipwreck site presents a stunning time capsule of life in North America immediately after the close of the Civil War. The archaeological excavation, the first of its kind ever conducted at such depths, produced more than 51,000 gold and silver coins and nearly 14,000 artifacts—a wealth of mid-19th century trade goods hidden on the ocean floor for more than a century. Sailing the high seas armed with advanced technology and the world’s leading shipwreck experts, Odyssey is opening up the last unexplored frontier—the deep ocean. Explore the cutting-edge technology used to conduct groundbreaking discoveries by experiencing up-close, life-sized replicas of some of these cool tools. Visitors can even operate the ROV ZEUS’ robotic arm in an interactive challenge to recover coins. SHIPWRECK! explores the fascinating world of shipwrecks, pirate lore and sunken treasure, featuring in-depth stories behind some of the world's most famous shipwrecks, spanning centuries of maritime history, that were recovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration. Through more than 500 authentic artifacts recovered from various shipwrecks, hands-on interactives and computer games, SHIPWRECK! amazes visitors with the adventure and excitement of deep-ocean shipwreck exploration. The subject of shipwrecks would not be complete without pirates! Pirate lore, legend and facts capture the attention of visitors with interactive pirate-themed experiences. Encounter some of the notorious pirates that sailed the seas including Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Barbary Corsairs, Privateers and Buccaneers. There is a $5 surcharge in addition to museum general admission for SHIPWRECK!
