“The plans are fabulous! The New Witte will add so much to our city and to the enjoyment of the school children and families.”

Edith McAllister

Imagine walking up to a sweeping new entrance with a grand lobby that provides a dramatic welcome for visitors. An aqueduct will carry water from the river, through the Grand Entry, out over the walkways, driveways and lawns, and into a pool fronting Broadway. A splashing fountain will capture the attention of the thousands of motorists who drive by the museum every day.  Guests will queue for admission inside in comfort before moving into the galleries and the open, natural spaces of the Witte campus.

The story of South Texas will unfold as visitors enter the grand new entrance of the Witte Museum.  The Grand Hall will unite past and present with a look to the future.  With high ceilings and floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the San Antonio River and the rest of the Witte campus, this space will instill awe as visitors enter the museum among exhibit displays of our majestic ancestors, the dinosaurs.  By sparking the imagination and using natural history to begin the South Texas story, the Witte hopes to heighten the visitor experience through the rest of the 10 acre campus.

The breathtaking new entrance and Valero Great Hall will be dedicated to Dinosaurs: Vanished Texans, including new prehistoric creatures.   Texas’ own Quetzalcoatlus Northropi, the largest flying creature ever discovered, with its 40-foot wingspan will hover overhead.  As the campus expands, so will our holdings that will highlight both our current paleontology collection and fabulous new replica pieces.

As part of the renovation and expansion of the original Witte building, one of visitors’ favorite Witte galleries, Texas Wild, featuring native Texas animals, will get its first new home in almost 70 years.  In addition, new spaces for increased science programming and curricula will allow us to continue to serve growing populations of students.

The Witte has specifically programmed ever-transforming galleries to attract new visitors and encourage repeat visitation.
