3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an Alebrije art demonstration at the Witte Museum. This interactive demonstration coincides with the Witte’s breathtaking new exhibition ¡Órale! The Magical Art of Oaxaca.
Join us Wednesday, September 29th from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. for this Alebrije art demonstration where you will learn how to create your own brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculpture. Husband and wife art duo, Efraín and Silvia Fuentes from the village of San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca, Mexico will demonstrate techniques used to create an Alebrije and discuss the symbolism of these fantastical carved creatures. Watch Efraín Fuentes hand carve a sculpture right before your eyes while his wife Silvia demonstrates how she intricately paints detailed designs, completely freehand using traditional Zapotec and modern designs. Witte inspired Alebrje activites will be provided.
Expand your experience by visiting the special exhibition ¡Órale! The Magical Art of Oaxaca located on the 2nd floor of the Susan Naylor Center beside the Kittie West Nelson Ferguson People of the Pecos Gallery. Explore the origins of Oaxacan artisans’ raw materials and journey through the creation of their artwork. Learn of the different themes and subjects that have been carried into our San Antonio culture from Mexico.
Learn to create your own fantastical creature! The demonstration, Alebrije activities and viewing of the exhibition ¡Orale! The Magical Art of Oaxaca is FREE with purchase of Museum Admission. Space is limited for the demonstration so please RSVP below.
