Homeschool Day: Fangs and Fins

What better way to spend a day than immersing your students in the Witte Museum? Join us for a fun day of self-guided interactive learning at Homeschool Day!

Admission includes 9 a.m. early entry, tickets to the special exhibition, Unseen Oceans, and exclusive access to educator-led demonstrations. We encourage you to stay and bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at one of our picnic areas.

Enjoy a reading of A Dive into the Deep by Tessa Pfeifer followed by a take home craft.

Deep Sea Darkness – SWBC Live Lab
Have you ever wondered what could be at the bottom of the ocean? Why do scientists know more about the surface of Mars than what lies deep under the sea? Dive into a demonstration of Deep Sea Darkness and discover the wonders of the world’s largest habitat!

Under Pressure – Gunn Gallery
How do fish survive the crushing pressure and ice-cold temperatures at the bottom of the ocean? Learn about how deep-sea marine fish control their buoyancy, survive extreme pressure and temperature, and find food in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth.

Spider Spotlight – SWBC Live Lab
Have you ever wondered how a spider senses the world around them? There are thousands of these amazing arachnids all over the world—from your backyard to the top of Mount Everest! Come explore the weird and wonderful world of spiders in Spider Spotlight!

Enjoy a reading of Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean’s Most Fearless Scientist by Jess Keating followed by a take home craft.

Fangtastic – SWBC Live Lab
Think you could tell the difference between a venomous and a poisonous snake? In this demonstration, compare 3-D printed snake fangs to discover how snakes around the world catch their prey. Learn about the functions of fangs and the power of poison!

Animal Encounter – Memorial Auditorium 
Did you know the museum is home to several Texas native animals? Find out more about our backyard neighbors during a demonstration of Animal Encounters. Learn about how these animals help support healthy habitats, and what we can do to help them in return.
