Black Cowboys: An American Story

Explore the lives and work of the numerous Black men, women and children – enslaved and free – who labored on the ranches of Texas and participated in cattle drives before the Civil War through the turn of the twentieth century in Black Cowboys: An American Story, returning to the Witte Museum this summer. Updated and redesigned for its encore presentation, this powerful exhibition offers insight into legendary cowboys, a clearer picture of the Black West and a more diverse portrait of the American West.

Mary Virginia Carson: Pioneer Artist Capturing Rock Art with Watercolors

In 1931, the Witte Memorial Museum hired Carson—an artist, architect and engineer—to join an expedition into the wilds of western Texas. Her mission? To capture the stunning rock art murals created thousands of years ago by the first people of Texas. Perched on hot rocks beneath a blazing sun, Carson rendered the images before her in watercolor with remarkable accuracy.
