Spiders - From Fear to Fascination

Crawl into the adventure with friends and family and explore both live and preserved specimens, alongside interactive experiences and discover recent scientific findings. Learn about the myths surrounding spiders, and discover their ecological importance and cultural significance. Take an up-close look at the 300-million-year evolution of spiders and see 16 live spider species, including the Black Widow and Brown Recluse, then engage with virtual elements to explore the 48,000 known spider species.

Black Cowboys: An American Story

Explore the lives and work of the numerous Black men, women and children – enslaved and free – who labored on the ranches of Texas and participated in cattle drives before the Civil War through the turn of the twentieth century in Black Cowboys: An American Story, returning to the Witte Museum this summer. Updated and redesigned for its encore presentation, this powerful exhibition offers insight into legendary cowboys, a clearer picture of the Black West and a more diverse portrait of the American West.

Conference on Texas

Ode to Juneteenth: Slavery in Texas

This two-day museum-wide conference will reveal the foundational role of chattel slavery in the formation and growth of Texas. Sessions will center on the lives of the enslaved people, especially as mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. Enslaved people not only labored on cotton and sugar plantations, they also worked as artisans such as blacksmiths, seamstresses, and as enslaved cowboys. Through new scholarship, the Conference will broaden the understanding of the ongoing legacies from slavery which continue to impact African Americans in Texas.
